Taiwan Ultimate Firefighter International Invitation Enters a New Era: Over 500 Domestic and International Athletes Compete

The National Fire Agency, together with the Taiwan Fire Development and Exchange Association, Taiwan Pioneers, and the Taiwan Tactical Strength and Conditioning Association, is jointly hosting the "2026 Taiwan Ultimate Firefighter International Invitational" today and tomorrow (August 1–2) at the Nantou Training Center.

This year's event has reached a new record scale, with 169 competitors in the individual event and 438 participants in the team event. Sixteen top international athletes from Brazil, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia have traveled across the ocean to compete, and a professional American event host has also been invited to take part. In addition, for the first time this year, in response to the theme of "sport for all, resilience for all," a public experience division has been added, drawing 16 teams totaling 46 members of the public to take on the challenge, creating a lively atmosphere on site.

At the opening ceremony, National Fire Agency Director-General Hsiao Huan-chang presented certificates of appreciation to co-organizers Taiwan Forerunners and the Taiwan Tactical Strength and Conditioning Association, as well as to sponsors including the Taiwan Fire Development and Exchange Association, Zinan Temple, SBD Taiwan, Tsaidong Technology, and Kang Li An Smart Healthcare, thanking these private-sector partners and enterprises for contributing resources as a strong backing for fire service personnel.

Director-General Hsiao noted that promoting firefighting competitions toward becoming an official event under the Sports Administration would not only accelerate the institutionalization and popularization of firefighting sports culture, but also serve as an important indicator of national security resilience. To this end, the National Fire Agency has in recent years partnered with the National Sports Training Center to introduce science-based data, refining seven tactical fitness training items including the trap bar deadlift and loaded carries, comprehensively improving firefighters' muscular endurance and fireground response capabilities. At the same time, the agency has actively held tactical fitness instructor training programs, having completed cumulative training for nearly 400 participants across basic, advanced, and instructor-level courses, embedding the concept of tactical fitness at the grassroots level and working with full effort to protect the safety of fire service colleagues during disaster response.

Director-General Hsiao emphasized that physical fitness is the foundation for firefighters carrying out daily duties and fire suppression operations. Firefighters at a fire scene wear full turnout gear, carry self-contained breathing apparatus, and bring forcible-entry equipment, often bearing loads of more than 20 kilograms — an extremely high-intensity physical challenge. To ensure the safety of colleagues during disaster response, the National Fire Agency is actively introducing science-based tactical fitness training to comprehensively strengthen personnel performance under high-pressure fireground conditions.

Director-General Hsiao explained that this competition breaks down real firefighting tasks into four major events: "hose deployment," "ladder raising and equipment transport," "heavy object breaching and patient rescue," and "loaded stair climb," which severely test competitors' muscular endurance, explosive power, and cardiopulmonary function. Competition results will also serve as an important reference for future selection of athletes for the World Police and Fire Games.

Director-General Hsiao stated that another major highlight of this year's event is the inaugural "Public Experience Division," which drew enthusiastic responses from 19 male and 27 female participants from the public. Through this, participants personally experienced the arduous training process firefighters regularly undergo. The organizers hope that through public participation, spectating, and hands-on experience, society will gain a deeper understanding of the professionalism and hard work involved in firefighting, thereby raising public safety awareness. They also hope that this international-level competition will help enhance frontline disaster response capabilities and team cohesion, drive the continued advancement of Taiwan's firefighting sports culture, and unite efforts to safeguard the safety of the public.
